Midwife Consultations

Early Pregnancy Service

The famous two lines. Positive. Pregnant. Smiley. The tests come in many forms, and the reactions to the result are never to predict. Happy, sad, overwhelmed, scared, exited, and for the most – all at the same time.

And then comes the question: what now? How do I secure a healthy pregnancy? what is happening to my body? Why does my partner react that way? Is the baby healthy? Who do I call? What examinations do I get?

Usually, in Danish public health care, you will see the midwife for the first time sometime between pregnancy week 12-18. In my experience, many questions, anxieties and symptoms have already formed your life at this point, and the advice from a professional would have come in handy.

I offer early midwife-services from the day you test positive until the pregnancy is at a point where the physical aspects of the baby’s growth and birth are more in focus (weeks 6-20). During these early midwife consultations, the topics will amongst others be:

  • the physical changes happening in our body

  • the growth and development of the fetus

  • supplements and nutritional advice

  • fear of miscarriage

  • sex life during pregnancy

  • the normal examinations performed in Danish public maternity care

  • scans

  • whatever is on your mind!

The early midwifery consultations are 45 minutes and usually do not involve any physical examinations, unless you have a wish for it.

Midwife consultations

From week 18 or so you will start anticipating the first kick! What a mile stone! Suddenly the pregnancy is not only a fact to consider, dreams and thoughts. No, now, the pregnancy turns focus- there is a real live baby in there. As the baby grows bigger (from week 20), the need for physical examinations increase. Is the baby safe? Is it growing at the right pace? Is your body handling the process? Every midwife consultation in this period will include a number of physical examinations to secure the healthy growth and development of your baby and yourself.

The examinations include: blood pressure, urinalysis, listening to the heart beat, measuring the belly for growth, assessment of fetal weight. These examinations will be the same as in public health care.

But of course, the pregnancy is not only about the physical aspects. This is the time, where you bond with your baby, sing to it, get to know it, learn its habits.

  • It allways wakes up to be with dad in the middle of the night!

  • She jumps around everytime I have something to eat- she must love food!

  • This baby is crazy active- maybe I’m carrying the next Messi!

  • He got so scared, when the music started playing so loud!

Every consultation will include the possibility to discuss issues that are important to you. These issues can be everything from

  • worries about the baby

  • practical issues of Danish laws about maternity leave

  • communication with the public health care system

  • networking possibilities

  • birth

It is important to be met with time, space and calm so you feel comfortable talking about intimate issues and feelings surrounding the pregnancy. This is why I choose to use an hour for the consultation, and it can be done in whatever setting you prefer, at your job, at your home, or at my consultation facilities.
